Prime Minister Manmohan Singh of India discussed economic reforms and leadership strategies during a meeting with 38 students who traveled to India during last month’s Chazen International Study Tour.Singh outlined his vision for how to expand India’s economy at an 8 to 10 percent annual rate, based on reforms initiated during his tenure as finance minister in the early 1990s. He described challenges facing the country, such as the need to improve its power and transportation infrastructure. The January 2 meeting took place at his New Delhi residence and was also attended by groups from Stanford University and the Wharton School. When asked for his insights on leadership, Singh said the ability to manage change — and to guide all constituencies through the process — is essential, given that change is continuous and unavoidable.“Students were treated with an unforgettable introduction to the diversity of the country, its people and its culture — part steeped in history that goes back thousands of years, and part bounding forward toward a center-stage role in the modern global economy,” says Professor Hitendra Wadhwa, who traveled with the group on its tour through Agra, Delhi, Jaipur and Mumbai.
