Tammy Murphy
Tammy Snyder Murphy is a longtime advocate for women and families and a nationally recognized leader on climate action and maternal and infant health. She has spent her career working at the intersections of public service, philanthropy, and global engagement to improve outcomes for communities across New Jersey and beyond.
Born in Norfolk, Virginia, Tammy is a graduate of the University of Virginia, where she held leadership roles including Vice President of the College, Vice Chair of the Honor Committee and later served as Foundation Trustee and Member of the Board of Visitors. She began her professional career in international finance, working on Wall Street and overseas in London, Frankfurt, Hong Kong, and Berlin.
Tammy is married to former New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy, and they have four children. From 2018 to 2026, she served as First Lady of New Jersey, where she launched and led major initiatives, including Nurture NJ, the state’s nationally recognized maternal and infant health program; Golden Seeds, a national angel investor network supporting female and minority entrepreneurs; Climate Change Education in the K12 curriculum making New Jersey a leader in climate education and clean energy workforce development. She also played a central role in economic development for the state, helping to attract corporate investment and jobs, including the rebirth of the state’s film and television industry and the hosting of the FIFA World Cup 2026.
She founded and chaired the New Jersey Pandemic Relief Fund during COVID-19, raising and deploying more than $88 million to support families, small businesses, and underserved communities statewide who were excluded from government assistance.
Today, Tammy serves as charter member of the Climate Reality Action Fund and as a board member of The Climate Reality Project, organizations founded by former Vice President Al Gore. She also serves as Chair, FIFA World Cup 2026 New York New Jersey Host Committee, which is overseeing all facets for the region as it hosts eight World Cup matches including the Final. Tammy continues to serve on numerous nonprofit and civic boards focused on climate action, global cooperation, women’s leadership, public health, and sports, and remains deeply committed to advancing equity, sustainability, and opportunity for future generations.
