Geoffrey Heal, the Paul Garrett Professor of Public Policy and Business Responsibility at Columbia Business School, joined an esteemed panel of scientists, business leaders and senior elected officials, including Governor George Pataki of New York, to critically evaluate U.S. conservation laws and policies. The group, the Pew Oceans Commission, has since issued a landmark report that calls for immediate action to restore ocean wildlife and protect ocean ecosystems. Led by Leon E. Panetta, the commission examined the overfishing, overdevelopment along the coasts, and increased pollution that are leading to the decline of wildlife and the collapse of ecosystems. The resulting report proposes a conservation ethic that recognizes the nation’s economic dependence on healthy marine ecosystems and embraces the oceans as a public trust.
