International finance expert Charles Calomiris is the new academic director of the Jerome A. Chazen Institute of International Business. His global experience, both as an academic and a consultant, makes him particularly well suited to a role that oversees the School’s integration of international business throughout the academic experience.
Working at the forefront of practical and theoretical finance, Calomiris, the Henry Kaufman Professor of Financial Institutions, is one of the country’s leading authorities on financial institutions. His research and teaching span banking, corporate finance, financial history and monetary economics. In addition to his work in the domestic arena, Calomiris is an expert on international finance, particularly with regard to Latin America, where he has served as a consultant to banks, firms and governments.
Within the School community, Calomiris is known as an innovator in the classroom. In collaboration with Professor David Beim, he developed the Emerging Financial Markets course, for which he received the Chazen International Innovation Prize in 1998. He also teaches corporate finance at the MBA and PhD levels and lectures about globalization as part of the Individual, Business and Society curriculum. Calomiris has been a research associate at the National Bureau of Economic Research since 1996, and in 2000 he was a fellow at the Council on Foreign Relations. At the American Enterprise Institute, Calomiris codirects its project on financial regulation and is the Arthur Burns Scholar in International Economics. His extensive government experience includes appointments to the World Bank’s Project to Evaluate Industrial Credit Programs in Japan, as a visiting scholar to the Federal Reserve Bank of New York and as a congressional appointee to the International Financial Institutions Advisory Commission.
As academic director of the Chazen Institute, Calomiris will also act as faculty director of the Chazen Faculty Advisory Committee, the Chazen Web Journal’s Advisory Committee and Columbia’s Center for International Business Education and Research (CIBER). Calomiris succeeds a distinguished group of Chazen academic directors, including Professors Alberto Giovannini, Trevor Harris, Robert Hodrick and Elke Weber.
