The grant will support participant payments running experiments to understand when and why people engage in informal borrowing -- borrowing money outside traditional financial institutions.

Informal borrowing is a significant yet understudied part of the economy. Understanding consumers' motivations in doing so is key to helping promote consumer financial well-being.
