Columbia Business School’s Professor Rita McGrath spoke with Forbes contributor Lisa Bodell about why many corporate leaders unknowingly undermine their own strategies. McGrath explained that organizations often become trapped by outdated assumptions, rigid planning cycles, and a reluctance to confront emerging threats. She noted that effective leaders must continually challenge their mental models, embrace discovery-driven learning, and identify small signals of change early, key themes she explores in her book Seeing Around Corners. McGrath emphasized that adaptability, not stability, is now the most critical leadership skill.
