Columbia Business School Professor Nicole DeHoratius spoke with Marketplace reporter Carla Javier about why discount retailers such as TJX continue to post strong sales despite broader economic uncertainty. DeHoratius explained that TJX’s flexible merchandising model allows it to rapidly adjust inventory and capture value from excess supply in the market—an advantage that traditional retailers often lack. She noted that consumers, increasingly price-sensitive, are gravitating toward off-price stores that offer brand-name products at lower costs. The company’s operational discipline and ability to respond quickly to shifting demand have positioned it to exceed expectations even when the rest of the sector struggles.
