CEOs of Target, Hershey Honored with Deming Cup

The W. Edwards Deming Center for Quality, Productivity, and Competitiveness at Columbia Business School honored Michele Buck, chair, president, and CEO of The Hershey Company, and Brian Cornell, chair and CEO of Target, with the 2023 Deming Cup for Operational Excellence during a ceremony at Columbia University's Low Library Rotunda in October.

Buck became Hershey's first female president and CEO in 2017, after previous roles within the company and at Kraft/Nabisco and the Frito-Lay division of PepsiCo. She earned a bachelor's degree at Shippensburg University and an MBA from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Buck was recognized on Fortune's Most Powerful Women list each year from 2017-2021.

Cornell oversees Target's global business, including nearly 1,800 stores in North America, and Target.com, with 347,000 team members. He joined Target in August 2014 after more than 30 years at leading retail and global consumer product companies. Cornell earned a bachelor's degree at the University of California, Los Angeles, and attended its Anderson School of Management.

The Deming Center has awarded the Deming Cup for Operational Excellence since 2010. It recognizes business leaders for outstanding performance in operations and for fostering a culture of continuous improvement within their organizations by following Deming's philosophy and principles. The award also facilitates opportunities for business leaders to continue engaging with CBS's academic community.

The W. Edwards Deming Center for Quality, Productivity, and Competitiveness was founded in 1993. Its mission is to sponsor applied research, disseminate best practices, support focused education and professional development, and foster partnerships with companies in the area of operational excellence. Appointed distinguished professor in management at CBS in 1986, Deming was an esteemed advisor, consultant, author, and teacher who mentored many influential leaders and scientific pioneers.
