Assaf Zeevi, the Kravis Professor of Business in the School’s Decision, Risk, and Operations Division, will become Vice Dean for Research, effective July 1, 2011. He succeeds Gita Johar, the Meyer Feldberg Professor of Business and inaugural vice dean for research. Even though it was created less than a year ago, the position of vice dean for research has already become central to the School, deepening the ties between the School’s intellectual capital and the questions that face business leaders, and raising the profile of research at the School.
"Research lies at the core of shaping business practice and preparing future business leaders, and the results of raising the profile of research at the School have already begun to show themselves," Dean Glenn Hubbard said. "I look forward to having Assaf add his ideas to what has been a very strong start for this new role."
Zeevi joined the School as an assistant professor in 2001, and in 2003 was awarded the Dean’s Prize for Teaching Excellence. He was promoted to the position of Associate Professor in 2004 and named the inaugural Gantcher Associate Professor of Business in 2005. In 2007, Zeevi was awarded tenure, and a year later he was elevated to the rank of professor. In July 2009, he was named the Kravis Professor of Business. Zeevi’s work has appeared in Management Science, The Annals of Applied Probability, The Annals of Statistics, Manufacturing and Service Operations Management, Operations Research, and Mathematics of Operations Research. In 2009, Zeevi became department editor for Management Science, for which he served as associate editor from 2004 to 2006. He has also served on the editorial boards of several other publications in his field. Prior to joining the Columbia Business School faculty, Zeevi served as a consultant to several companies in Silicon Valley and to IBM Research Labs. He holds a PhD in electrical engineering and statistics and an MS in financial mathematics from Stanford University, and an MS in statistics from Technion, the Israeli Institute of Technology.
