Columbia Business School’s Professor Mabel Abraham spoke with Fortune reporter Sydney Lake about the recent wave of high-profile women leaders stepping down from top positions in the real estate sector, including at Fannie Mae, Freddie Mac, and Opendoor. Abraham explained that while these departures are often attributed to individual career choices, they also reflect deeper structural issues—from unequal access to mentorship and stretch roles to the heightened scrutiny women face in leadership. She noted that without institutional support and sustained cultural change, organizations risk losing talented executives who might otherwise continue to shape the industry.
