Jane Yang '10 is a real estate investment professional and professor at Columbia Business School, where she teaches the Real Estate Capstone course. She brings over 18 years of experience spanning $4.5 billion in transactions across all asset types. She is the founder of Cooper Square, a vertically integrated real estate owner, operator, and investor focused on the manufactured housing sector. Before founding Cooper Square, Jane had an extensive career holding roles at leading institutions including Prospect Ridge, Meadow Partners, and Lehman Brothers, building expertise across real estate private equity, distressed investing, and restructuring.Jane holds an MBA from Columbia Business School where she was a Bodini Fellow and the recipient of the Alexander Bodini Foundation Prize Competition. She also holds an AB in Government from Harvard University.
On Friday, November 21st, 2025, Columbia Business School welcomed more than 80 graduate students from Columbia, NYU, MIT, and Harvard for the 14th annual Coming to Terms: Negotiating Joint Ventures workshop. Co-hosted by the Paul Milstein Center for Real Estate and the MIT Center for Real Estate, the full-day program gave students an immersive look into the strategy, structure, and negotiation dynamics that define real estate joint ventures.
Brian P. Lancaster is a Senior Lecturer in the Discipline of Finance at the Columbia Business School. Professor Lancaster teaches the following courses: Real Estate Finance, Real Estate Debt Markets, Residential Real Estate Finance: Dirt, Debt and Derivatives, Capital Markets and Investments, Real Estate Entrepreneurship, and Debt Markets in the MBA, EMBA, PhD and MS&E programs. Professor Lancaster received the Robert. W. Lear Award in 2023 which is presented annually to the faculty member who most clearly demonstrates commitment to students through accessibility and an overall contribution to the improvement of student life and education. He was also chosen by the Student Government Executive Board and MBA Class of 2025 as the winner of the 2025 Singhvi Prize for Scholarship in the Classroom, which is awarded to a full-time faculty member who exemplifies excellence in the classroom, based on his or her dedication to teaching and ability to communicate knowledge and encourage students.He is also a faculty sponsor of Chazen Global Study Tours as well as the faculty sponsor for joint Chazen Institute-Real Estate Association Global Study tours.
The Problem: New York City’s real estate market is at a transition point. Coming out of the COVID-19 pandemic, the city’s real estate market has seen signifcant shifts, including increased urban-to-suburban migration (Gupta et al. 2022), residential rent and housing affordability issues, and reduced value and usage of urban office space due to the adoption of remote and hybrid work (Gupta, Mittal, and Van Nieuwerburgh 2023) and higher interest rates.
Columbia Business School’s case competition team finished first place in the 2024 Real Estate Development Challenge hosted by the Leonard W. Wood Center for Real Estate Studies at Kenan-Flagler Business School and presented by Hines. Team members Chris Byrns ’25, Connor Corcoran ’24, Katy Lepeturin ’25, and Rachel Lee ’25 inspired the judges and crowd by presenting a plan to redevelop the historic Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington, D.C.
