Data Agreements
If you are going to use data owned by another party and/or engage with another organization in your research, you may need to sign an agreement that sets terms for that work. There are a few things for you to know if an agreement is in order:
- The University only extends signatory authority to a limited set of individuals (that is, no one else can legally sign documents on behalf of the institution). At CBS, these individuals are the Dean and COO. Please do not sign anything yourself (doing so may put you and the institution at risk). Among other things, University agreements safeguard your intellectual property rights and your ability to publish your research findings, and as such protect your work as a faculty member.
- There are boilerplate agreements that the School has crafted with our partners in the Office of General Counsel, Sponsored Projects Administration, and Columbia Technology Ventures. If you're being asked to sign an agreement, please send the standard one to the other party to see if it can suffice (this works more often than you might think!). If the other party will not use Columbia's standard document, the Dean's Office teams will need to work directly with our University partners to negotiate an agreement. This can take some time, so please loop in Lisa Andujar ([email protected]) as soon as you know this may be needed.
- For a quick guide to data transfers and non-disclosure agreements, including a pre-approved form for data transfers, please refer to this page on the Faculty Governance website.
