Michael Franklin is a 2023 Visiting Fellow at CITI and Lecturer in Creative and Cultural Entrepreneurship at Goldsmiths College, University of London. His research concentrates on issues of risk, valuation, finance, data, and market devices in the creative industries. Recent projects focussing on Film and High-End Television include the book Risk in the Film Business: Known Unknowns (Routledge, 2022) which follows publications in the Journal of Creative Cultural Economics; Information, Communication & Society; and industry initiatives with British Screen Forum, Film London, and the Sundance Institute.
This work has led to impact recognised by the Research Excellence Framework, and in policy texts such as House of Lords Communications and Digital Committee - At Risk: Our Creative Future (2023); British Screen Forum - UK Screen Sectors: A Prospectus for Growth in an Age of Change (2022); British Film Institute - BFI Commission on Independent Film (2018). Such findings inform Dr Franklin’s teaching on BA, MA, and PhD programmes at Goldsmiths including the creation of the Creative Entrepreneurship Cluster. He holds a PhD and MA Hons from the University of St Andrews where he conducted ESRC projects at the Institute for Capitalising on Creativity (ICC) in the School of Management. He has also earned postgraduate degrees from Bayes Business School, City, University of London and the University of Edinburgh. Currently, Dr Franklin is co-editing a special issue on AI for the journal of ENCATC - The European Network on Cultural Management and Policy.
