As part of its efforts to promote excellence in teaching at CBS, the Samberg Institute offers faculty members the opportunity to take part in two forms of coaching: (1) One-to-one with professionally trained coaches to develop their presentation skills, classroom facilitation, and/or course materials; and (2) Feedback Cycle Coaching for general guidance.
Please note: CBS faculty members are entitled to a maximum of three coaching sessions per academic year.
For our 1:1 coaching sessions, faculty members can choose to receive feedback in five key areas:
| CLASS OBSERVATION WITH GENERAL FEEDBACK | The coach will observe you teach via a Mock Lecture (practice class session), guest speaking engagement, or class observation (either in-person or via review of an Echo360 recording) and review recent student evaluation reports in order to provide you with comprehensive feedback on strengths and areas of growth in your content, delivery, and facilitation. |
| COURSE DESIGN | The coach can help you think through the overall design of your course, from overall course objectives, to sequencing coursework and class sessions into a course roadmap, to designing pre-work, assignments, and final deliverables. |
| SESSION DESIGN AND CLASSROOM FACILITATION | The coach can help you design a session lesson plan that optimizes for rigor, student engagement, and student learning and/or help you improve in specific classroom facilitation techniques, such as question agility, cold-calling, and effectively managing classroom discussions. |
| DELIVERY/PRESENTATION SKILLS | The coach can help you further develop methods of verbal and non-verbal communication in order to better connect with students and articulate your course content. |
| DIVERSITY TRAINING | The coach can help you approach difficult Diversity Equity & Inclusion (DEI)-related discussions and conversations, and help make your course materials and activities more inclusive. |
What You Can Expect From a 1:1 Coaching Session
Before
Samberg will partner with you to identify specific areas of feedback and will then pair you with a relevant coach, based on scheduling availability. Samberg will coordinate with you and the coach to schedule your session(s), and make the logistical arrangements for the coaching session. The coach will view past Echo recordings of your teaching (if available), read your most recent course evaluations, and provide you with feedback during the coaching session. Additionally, if there are other materials you would like the coach to review before you meet with them, please let Samberg know.
During
Coaching sessions typically last for one hour. You can bring prepared content (course materials or a live lesson) to the coaching session for feedback. Regardless of format, the coach will work with you to determine 1-2 specific, practical steps you can take to maximize your impact once the coaching session is concluded.
After
Samberg will ask you to complete a brief survey about the usefulness/applicability of the coaching session in order to ensure our coaching service continues to meet the needs of CBS faculty members.
Feedback Cycle Coaching
If you aren't sure where to start and/or would like general improvement, you can choose to work with a professional coach from vendor Beacon Instructional Partners. This coaching engagement would include 3 to 5 sessions over the course of the semester during which you are teaching, including meetings before the course begins, during the semester, and after it has ended.
Costs
The costs associated with coaching are most often paid for by Samberg at no cost to you or your Division. However, extended coaching arrangements beyond the three annual coaching sessions offered to CBS faculty members each academic year may incur additional costs for you or your Division. Please note: faculty are asked to provide 48 hours of advanced notice if you need to reschedule. If less than 48 hours is given, the charge for the coach will be re-routed to your division.
