Active Learning: The ReCAP Framework

What is ReCAP?

The ReCAP Framework, Readiness, Check for Understanding, Apply & Practice, and Prompt Reflection, is a structured approach to designing dynamic and compelling learning experiences. Developed at Columbia Business School (CBS) specifically for CBS classes, ReCAP integrates evidence-based teaching practices into a practical framework that faculty can apply immediately.

Each component of ReCAP aligns with decades of research on how people learn best. By systematically incorporating activities across all four categories, instructors can ensure comprehensive student engagement, deeper understanding, and lasting learning outcomes.

The Four Components of ReCAP

Why it works: Learning is most effective when students actively connect new material to what they already know (Ambrose et al., 2010; Bransford, Brown, & Cocking, 2000). Readiness strategies hold students accountable while activating the prior knowledge they need to make sense of new material.

Purpose: Ensure students come prepared and ready to engage with new material

Example Strategies:

  • Entrance Quizzes: Brief 5-10 minute quizzes covering assigned readings to verify preparation and activate knowledge
  • Preparation Polls: Anonymous assessment of readiness and confidence levels
  • Reading Tickets: Students submit evidence of preparation before class
  • Cold Calling: Random selection to answer questions, promoting consistent preparation

Why it works: The “testing effect” shows that retrieval practice strengthens memory more than passive review (Roediger & Karpicke, 2006). Frequent formative feedback helps students identify gaps while providing instructors with real-time data to adjust their teaching (Black & Wiliam, 1998).

Purpose: Quick assessments to gauge students’ grasp of material in real-time

Example Strategies:

  • Think-Pair-Share: Think individually, discuss with a peer, then share with the class
  • 1-Minute Paper: Brief written response to a specific question
  • Poll or Quiz: Tools like Poll Everywhere for quick comprehension checks
  • Thumbs Up/Down: Hand gestures to signal understanding
  • Concept Map: Visual representation of key concepts and relationships

Why it works: Active learning produces significantly better outcomes than passive listening (Freeman et al., 2014). Application activities create “desirable difficulties” (Bjork & Bjork, 2011). When students struggle productively with authentic problems, they develop a deeper understanding and transfer knowledge more effectively to new situations.

Purpose: Activities that allow students to apply concepts in practical scenarios

Example Strategies:

  • Case-Based Discussions: Analyze real-world scenarios related to the lesson
  • Role Play/Simulation: Act out situations to practice skills or understand perspectives
  • Group Problem-Solving: Teams collaborate to develop solutions to complex problems
  • Structured Debates: Debates on topics to encourage critical thinking
  • AI Tool Utilization: Use AI to generate examples or test understanding

Why it works: Students who regularly reflect on their learning process become better learners (Schraw & Dennison, 1994). Reflection helps students consolidate learning, identify connections, and develop metacognitive awareness, a hallmark of expert learners (National Research Council, 2000).

Purpose: Encourage students to reflect on their learning process and outcomes

Example Strategies:

  • Exit Tickets: Reflective questions before leaving (e.g., “muddiest point”)
  • Learning Journals: Regular reflection entries on what students have learned
  • What? So What? Now What?: Structured reflection process
  • Personal Connection: Relate material to own experiences
  • Discussion Boards: Online forums for reflections

Begin by watching the explainer video. This video shows the ReCAP Framework with application examples, perfect for getting a feel for how it works before diving into the details.

2. Keep the Quick Reference Handy

Download the Framework Handout and keep it on your desk. Pick one component to try first; for example, add a Check for Understanding activity midway through the next class. Notice how it changes student engagement.

3. Design a Complete Lesson

When ready to redesign a full session, use the step-by-step Lesson Planning Guides. Whether planning a focused 90-minute class or an intensive 3-hour session, these guides walk instructors through the entire design process, from defining learning objectives to selecting activities and allocating time. Each guide ensures that faculty will incorporate all four ReCAP components in a balanced way.

4. Generate Fresh Ideas with AI
