Embracing AI in Digital Learning Communities (part of NYC EdTech Week)
Thursday, October 10th, 2024; 10:30 a.m. - 11:30 a.m. EST (In person)
In this session, we will delve into the innovative ways digital learning communities address the challenges and opportunities presented by AI in education. We'll begin by exploring current research that highlights how thoughtful design in these communities inherently discourages "cheating" with AI, debunking common myths and misconceptions. As AI becomes an integral part of students' lives, we'll discuss the importance of embracing this reality and pivoting our approach to help students understand and use AI as a valuable tool for learning.
Additionally, participants will learn how to analyze edtech tools for their use of AI and gain tips for identifying low-lift ways to incorporate AI into their courses beyond auto-generated text. We'll showcase how AI can assist instructors in creating effective, engaging communities that foster authentic learning experiences. Join us to discover how learning communities are paving the way for a more adaptive and supportive educational environment in the age of AI.
Lunch & Learn: Using Your LMS for Teaching Success: Canvas Techniques That Make a Difference
Wednesday, May 8, 2024; 12 p.m. - 1 p.m. EST on Zoom (no in-person option)
The session will be recorded and distributed post session.
Using Canvas - the Learning Management System used across CBS courses - can improve both teaching and student learning. It is a fantastic tool for sharing course materials, enhancing class discussion, encouraging peer-to-peer collaboration, and facilitating learning activities. There are other lesser-known uses, however, that can help test acumen and facilitate course design. Through this one-hour interactive workshop, faculty will not only learn about the benefits of Canvas, but how to build modules and quizzes as formative assessment tools. By the end of session, faculty will acquire agility to work within Canvas and feel inspired to optimize their courses through the LMS.
Learning Objectives:
- Discuss ways Canvas can enhance your course design process.
- Create new student learning opportunities through Canvas integrations.
- Apply workshop learnings to a group brainstorm.

Lunch & Learn: Optimizing Grading Transparency
Wednesday, March 13 2024; 12:00 - 1:15pm on Zoom
One of the most common reasons students contest grades is because they don't understand how a grade was earned. Faculty work hard to make their assessment structure clear, but different grading expectations across higher education and even within CBS can still allow for confusion from students. Effective strategies for minimizing confusion (and thus contested grades) include clear rubrics, concrete instructions for assignments, and objective language. Through this interactive Lunch and Learn, participants will learn about the common mistakes faculty make in planning assessments and the importance of clarity and concreteness in setting coursework expectations. Further, we will offer actionable ideas to improve grading language and, as well as examples of communicating grading criteria more clearly and effectively.
Learning Objectives:
• Learn the benefits of grading transparently
• Explore key student pain points around grading
• Develop better language surrounding key assessment metrics
