What is the social or environmental issue being addressed?
85% of Indian small farmers lose money on average from farming. Half-a-billion smallholders globally suffer from low income due to poor yields, variable income due to climate and market fluctuations, and a lumpy income curve due to long crop cycles. These problems cause farmers' profits to get wiped out and cause them to get stuck in the poverty cycle. The number of smallholders that today have access to protected cultivation technologies is negligible due to high cost of structures, lack of knowledge to grow and lack of market linkages for high-quality produce.
Innovation:
Kheyti offers smallholder farmers in India "Greenhouse-in-a-Box" (GIB), a revolutionary, affordable 5,000 square foot greenhouse integrated with end-to-end services that can increase farm yields by 7 times and ensure a dependable monthly income to farmers, giving them a seamless path out of poverty.
