Local Civics
Founder:

Industry:
Education
Venture Type:
For-profit
What is the social or environmental issue being addressed?
A lack of high-quality civics education in K-12 classrooms leaves millions of students without the resources and tools to become civically engaged and develop a civic mindset. National civic test scores indicate an alarming decline in civic knowledge, participation, and trust among American youth.
- 43 percent of young people ages 18 to 29 voted in the 2016 US presidential election
- 24 percent of adults can name all three branches of the US federal government
Innovation:
Local Civics uses a goal-based tech platform and evidence-based curriculum to provide individualized experiences for middle and high school students to build their leadership, understand policies in their community, and design their own civic participation pathways.
In particular, their focus on civic participation experiences outside of school and use of technology to facilitate and personalize those civic experiences, creates an accessible onramp into civic life for any young person.
