Industry:
Water and agriculture
Venture Type:
For-profit
What is the social or environmental issue being addressed?
As a result of runoff from fertilizer and animal manure, agriculture is the biggest water pollutant to aquatic systems. Rivers, lakes, and streams become inundated with an excess of nutrients, which threatens the survival of aquatic ecosystems and access to safe, drinkable water for humans.
Innovation:
Using biotechnology, MicroTerra builds onsite water treatment systems with microalgae that make agricultural runoff water safe to drink and results in a food source that fish can eat.
